For day 2 of 21 days of courageous creativity I’ve chosen the prompt prayer.

My relationship with prayer started young

I have an interesting relationship with prayer. Being raised Catholic, I found many aspects of the prayers, songs and rituals that were wonderful and magical. I lost sight of these aspects on my own spiritual journey as I moved away from Catholicism for a variety of reasons.

What is prayer?

I have found myself recently reimagining what prayer looks like in my life. I no longer kneel in a church or gather in a religious community. Yet I am more attuned to my relationship to the Divine at this stage of my life than I have ever been and while I wouldn’t say that I pray in a traditional way, I am present to moments that feel like prayer:

  • the light shining on the ocean at sunset
  • dewdrops on a rose petal in early morning
  • a beautiful poem or turn of phrase in a book I am reading
  • a deepening of my connection to spirit in my own writing or art-making
  • a joyful remembering of a favorite face
  • a wishful thought or kindness sent through the magical realms to a friend

To me prayer feels like silence, connection, awe at the beauty of the world we live in.

Creating collage is a prayerful practice

As I reflect on today’s prompt and collage, I realize that prayer is a central facet of my life that is most often expressed through writing and intuitive art-making as well as being in nature.

I’m curious how prayer shows up in your life?

I am on a 21 Day journey through art and journaling to more Courageous Creativity. I am combining collage and writing to discover more about myself and to fall more in love with myself a little bit every day.
