Change your Business or Go Out of Business:

How Committed Are You?

Today I was surfing through a free e-book I had in my download folder. It was just one of many e-books full of marketing ideas, tips on attracting clients, blogging ideas and secrets to business success that I have downloaded in years past. I love free stuff and I am easily attracted to the bright and shiny promise of the next new marketing tactic that will lead to my overnight success, even though I know what I need to do be doing most days to build my business. It’s probably a good thing that I don’t watch the shopping networks on television – it would probably suck me in to all manner of products to make me thinner, smarter, faster, stronger, more beautiful, younger… you get the picture.

The truth is, it’s easier to download a free e-book or buy a $14.99 product that we hope will change our life than it is to actually knuckle down and do the work required to be successful. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big believer in the power of visualization and the law of attraction but I also know for a fact that visualization and affirmations will not bring you success unless you are willing to make the necessary changes and follow the specific action steps required to move you forward. Getting into action is what has changed my personal life and my business success!

As I was rapidly scanning the PDF file on my computer, this statement caught my eye: “Change Your Business or Go Out of Business.” Wow, I thought, that’s so true. The author, E.G. Sebastian, went on to say, “Every day I meet so many business owners who simply refuse to do things differently, but yet, they expect different results. That’s the textbook definition of insanity. You must be willing to change your advertising, marketing, production, and any and everything else, in order to survive during this new economy. That’s the truth, plain and simple.” Uh huh, I thought, yep, that’s the conversation I have been having with my clients over the past few months. But wait, uh oh, does this ring true for me, too?? Well of course it does!

It’s so much easier to check my email or surf my newsfeed on Facebook than it is to write my e-newsletter or, God forbid, pick up the phone and follow up with a lead – in person! Yikes. And I should know better. I am a business and marketing coach, I preach to my clients every day about consistency being crucial to business success. I teach time management tools and walk people through how to create an ideal client profile and a marketing calendar. I know this stuff, I have been teaching it to others for years… but the reality is that I am just like you. I am human and it’s way more fun to look at craft ideas on Pinterest than cold call a former client.

Lately, I have done a couple of things differently that are contributing to my success as a business and marketing coach. I thought I would share them with you and see if they might help you shift your focus so that you, too, can find the success you are seeking.

  1. At the top of my list this year is COMMITMENT to my own success, which means doing WHATEVER it takes to get the number of clients I need to reach my financial goals.
  2. Next is being a TIME NAZI! That means creating a marketing calendar and sticking to the tasks that I set for myself. I actually carve out specific amounts of time in my calendar to work on my money-making activities! Do you?
  3. In order to be an effective time Nazi means that I need to know a few things: 1) how many clients I need to make my financial goals and 2) what the best marketing activities are to reach my ideal client and 3) what the perfect sales strategy is to convince them that I am the best person to help them solve their problems.

Phew, it seems like a lot of work doesn’t it? But the reality is that once I made the commitment (okay that was the hardest part) and created the marketing calendar – the rest is easy-peasy! Lather, rinse, repeat.

Now it’s your turn, do you know what your “Lather, rinse, repeat” formula is for getting clients? If not, let’s talk and soon. Really, it’s March 3 already. 1st quarter is almost over, gulp! Are you where you said you wanted to be?? I am and I can help you get there, too.
