Journaling Prompts about Happiness
Yes, definitely, I would say there have been many such moments in my life. The last few years that I owned my publishing company were a challenge. We were struggling financially but I was also struggling emotionally. I was so done with the business but felt stuck and like I didn’t have any options. It would have been easy to sink into deep depression or overwhelm but instead I chose to focus on what was working: my wonderful family, my community, my art. Making a choice to feel grateful and focus on the positive helped to realize that by choosing happiness, I also chose success and clarity. I could suddenly see options and choices that I was blind to before. From the space of happiness, I made powerful decisions to turn my life and business around and eventually sell that business and move my family to our beautiful home in Santa Barbara, California.
Q: How do you remind yourself that happiness is always within and catch your footing in those whirlwind moments of life that can throw us off balance?
When I feel myself getting off balance or feeling sad, angry or depressed, I get outside. There is nothing like a walk on the beach near my home to remind me that I am going to be okay and that I get to choose. I rarely feel unhappy these days because I have made choosing happiness a daily practice. Yes, I have the occasional grumpy days. In fact, I had one this week and fussed too much at my son. Later I apologized, it wasn’t about him and that’s not the relationship I want to have with my children. When I choose happiness, so do they.
Q: What is your personal definition of happiness today?
My personal definition of happiness… that is a tough question. For me happiness is feeling balanced, connected, calm and grateful. I love the moments of giddy joy that happen on occasion or the silliness around the dinner table that has us all in hysterics. My daughter at 13 is such a beacon of bubbly joy and a wonderful reminder of the power of choosing happiness. She reminds me that happiness is a scale. Today I feel balanced and calm but look forward to some moments of sheer delight.
Q. Share three things that bring you happiness.
1. Walking on the beach
2. The sun shining through the birds of paradise blooming in my yard right now.
3. Snuggling on the couch with my kids or a quiet dinner out with my husband are priceless moments of happiness.
Thanks to my friend, Publisher Linda Joy, for these inspiring questions! I invite you to share how you choosing happiness moment in the comments below.
